As a therapist, I know when kids are “suppose” to reach their milestones and us moms really want our babies to hit them right on the mark! The internet says my kid should be sitting by six months! Sometimes that is not the case! Every baby is different and it is OK that they are not sitting up the second they turn 6 months!
If you’ve just stumbled across my post, you may not know that I have two little girls. Gianna my youngest (pictured above), six months and Aliza, 2 years old. Aliza, my 2 year old has Digeorge Syndrome which causes her to have low muscle tone. This made hitting milestones a little more challenging. She struggled to hold her head up as a baby, she started sitting at 9 months, she started to crawl at 10 months and starting walking at 19 months old with the help of physical therapy! Some of my friends had babies younger than Aliza doing more things than she could do and I would sometimes feel embarrassed. It is normal to feel this way but the only thing we can do as mommies is help our babies be the best that they can be. Stay positive and know that they will get there! Help them little by little and remember to consult with your doctor if you have any concerns!
What are Developmental Toys for babies?
Developmental toys are ones that provide the correct stimulation that your baby needs! There are a TON of baby toys out there! You may even get a bit overwhelmed when looking for the BEST toys for your baby. IT’S NORMAL! If anyone knows me, they know I get overwhelmed very easily! That is why I shop online most of the time! So I am here to help you! If your baby is 6-9 months and you are eager to have your little one sitting, I’m going to share some of my FAVORITE toys that helped my Aliza learn to sit, and now helping my Gianna!
Sitting Toys for Babies:
Teaching Triangle for Sitting Practice
I LOVE this teaching triangle! This toy has so many great gadgets. It moves, it shakes and has plenty of entertainment to keep your little one stimulated for quite some time. Before sitting, this was our go-to tummy time toy to keep Gianna on her belly, but now it’s our go-to toy to help keep her sitting! The teaching triangle is sturdy and makes for a great base of support. The first thing your little one will probably want to do when sitting up is tilt forward, having something like the teaching triangle in front of them will help encourage them to stay up straight when in the sitting position! When I first started putting the triangle in front of Gianna she would lean into it but the rattles and fun gadgets helped encourage her to sit up straight! Always be next to your little one when practicing and make sure they are on a soft surface if they do fall backwards or to the side!
** I am absolutely obsessed with our play mat !! We have had it for 3 years now! It is double sided, big, soft and easily folds for great storage! It is big enough for both my girls to play on and makes for a great learning experience as one side has the ABC’s and the other has labeled figures!
Toy with Piano for Sitting Practice
Toy With Piano: Activity gyms are the best, especially when they have so many beneficial elements to them! This piano mat is one of the girls favorite toys. The mat that was once used for our baby to lay on has now transformed into a sitting piano! It is the perfect toy to practice sitting balance. Their little legs fit perfectly under the piano and the two screws on the side of the piano hold it in place which makes for a sturdy sitting toy! The music and songs will keep your little one stimulated and focused while sitting upright!
Amazing Mushroom Infant Toy for Sitting Practice
The amazing mushroom infant toy is another great toy to introduce to your little one to practice sitting. This one requires a little more sitting readiness and requires your little one to have a little more balance. This toy also has tons of stimuli to keep your little one focused on something other than sitting. The toy is a nice height which requires your little one reach, hence requiring more balance! It has a lot of sounds and lights which are great for your little one to interact and play with!
This toy brings back happy memories for me! Like I mentioned earlier, Aliza did not learn to sit until she was 9 months old. Although I believe she regressed a ton after having open heart surgery at 5 months old. She was forced to spend 8 weeks on her back. She lost a lot of her strength not being able to do tummy time so it took her some time to catch up, but she did! I remember she got this toy as a gift and loved it. It really motivated her to start sitting up! I remember sitting her in front of it and she was reaching for the color balls on the top. They play music which she loved! Here is Aliza at 9 months old with her amazing mushroom!
Gianna thinks it’s so much more fun to play with her sister now!
